Potato and Onion Sambar

Ingredients:

1. Potato – 4 medium size
2. Toor dal – 1/4 cup
3. Onions – 2 or 10 to 15 sambar onions
4. Coconut gratings – 1/2 cup
5. Tamarind – small lemon sized
6. Jaggery – Little more than Tamarind
7. salt – 1 to 2 tsp.

For Masala:

1. Coriander seeds – 2 tsp
2. Black gram dal – 1 tsp
3. Jeera – 1/2 tsp
4. Methi seeds – 1/4 tsp(About 7 – 8 seeds)
5. Red chilies – 3 to 4
6. Asafetida(Hing) – little bit

Fry all these together in a medium flame till black gram dal(Urad dal) becomes light brown. Add 5-6 curry leaves and fry a little.

Method:

Wash and cut potatoes, onions in to small pieces. Cook tool dal in a pressure cooker till it becomes soft. Cook potatoes and onions separately with 2 cup of water. Add salt and Jaggery while cooking. After potatoes become soft add cocked toor dal and boil a little and keep aside.
Grind coconut gratings, fried masala and tamarind to a fine paste with some water. Add this paste to boiled potato and toor dal. Add some more salt and water if required and boil once again. Add some curry leaves after boiling.
Note: You can add green piece also.
